About the Artist

Ian Scott Whistler-Myers is the Costume Designer, Costume Shop Manager, and Visiting Instructir at the Festival Playhouse of Kalamazoo College. He prides himself on being a craftsman of multiple means through sewing, upholstery, 3d modeling, and painting.

Ian obtained his BFA in Design and Technical Production with a focus in Costume and Scenery Design through the School of Theatre and Dance at Western Michigan University. Additionally, he is also worked frequently with the LBGT Student Services Office at WMU and earned a concentration in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Justice through the WMU Signature Program.

Ian served as this organization’s secretary and later became one of their RSO Student Advisors during his time in undergrad.

Mission Statement: “OUTspoken is a Registered Student organization at Western Michigan University for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students, in addition to allies. Our purpose is to support people who identify within the LGBTQ+ community, to educate ourselves and others in issues pertaining to LGBTQ+ individuals, to advocate for the well-being of LGBTQ+ identified individuals through participation in civic processes, and to empower and unify people within the surrounding university and community.”

Student Diversity Advisory Council (SDAC)

2020-2022, Western Michigan University

Ian served as a student representative to this council during his time in undergrad. Representatives would meet biweekly with the Dean of the Fine Arts College, Dan Guyette, and with our University Facilitator, Kenlana Ferguson.

WMU Signature: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Justice

2018-2022, Western Michigan University

Ian pursued this additional concentration in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Justice throughout his time in undergrad. For his final project for the completion of the concentration, Ian hosted an OutSpoken! meeting explaining important information pertaining to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for interested students.

Description: “Western Michigan University recognizes that engagement outside of the classroom can contribute to student learning and development.To celebrate students' co-curricular achievements, the University will officially recognize students who have successfully completed their WMU Signature by including a WMU Signature Designation on their academic transcripts and diploma.”
